Oct 8: Harry Carney dies on Adams' birthday, in a symbolic way passing the baritone torch from its founder to its greatest innovator. Carney, ever the "iron man," only once missed two weeks of work in some fifty years with the Ellington band. For logistical reasons, it was easier, at that time, for a member of the Ellington sax section to slide over and take Carney's chair, and then hire an alto/tenor replacement, than to fly in Adams.
